Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's

Next year, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s political future hinges on his ability to convince both his Conservative party and the nation that he embodies a new direction.

Sunak sets to deliver his inaugural, and potentially final, address as party leader at the Conservative party’s annual conference this Wednesday. The party currently lags behind in the polls, and with an impending 2024 election, the stakes are high.

His core message revolves around his willingness to make challenging and substantial choices. He asserts that these decisions will yield “lasting achievements” rather than mere “short-term gains.”

However, Sunak currently faces challenges in terms of setting the political agenda. One of his significant decisions has already cast a shadow over the conference and created divisions within his party. Leaked information reveals his intention to significantly scale back an ambitious. And albeit over-budget, high-speed railway project designed to connect London and Manchester.

This move has met with opposition within the Conservative party. And with some members considering it ill-advised, especially given the conference’s location in Manchester.

Touted as a cornerstone of the government’s strategy to promote economic equality across the country by redirecting employment opportunities. And investments from the wealthier south to the less affluent north, its initial cost estimate in 2011 was 33 billion pounds. However, according to some estimates, it has ballooned to over 100 billion pounds ($122 billion) over the years.

In 2021, the Conservative government decided to abandon the Manchester-Leeds segment of the project in response to the COVID-19 pandemic’s disruption of train travel. While passenger numbers in the UK have rebounded, they remain at about 80% of their pre-pandemic levels.

There are proponents of axing the rail line, including Jack Brereton, a Conservative legislator from the Midlands. Brereton argues that HS2 has significantly exceeded its budget and has already undergone extensive cutbacks. And rendering it less effective in assisting the northern regions. He welcomes the decision to truncate the project. And suggesting that the funds saved could be redirected towards initiatives that genuinely contribute to the goal of economic “levelling up” in the Midlands and the North.

Sunak is actively working to persuade the electorate that a political party that has been in power for 13 years deserves another term. In recent weeks, he has unveiled populist policies. Such as slowing down the phasing out of fossil fuels, aimed at winning back voters who have turned away from the Conservatives. And due to concerns about the UK’s sluggish economy, a cost-of-living crisis, and a series of strikes. And including one by train drivers that disrupted the travel plans of some conference attendees on Wednesday.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s intend to recognize the prevalent sentiment that people fatigued with politics. And share the undeniable perception that politics often falls short of its expected effectiveness.

In his address, he is expected to remark, “Our political system excessively fixated on immediate gains. And often at the expense of lasting accomplishments.” He will emphasize the idea that politicians invest more effort in campaigning for change than in actually implementing it. Sunak’s mission, as he outlines it, is to instigate a profound transformation in the nation, prioritizing long-term success over short-term political maneuvers.
