The judge presiding over former President Donald Trump’s civil fraud trial in New York City, Arthur Engoron, has exclusively made political donations to Democratic candidates, as reported.
Judge Engoron holds significant authority in the proceedings of Trump’s civil fraud case. This trial operates without a jury. So with Engoron serving as the sole overseer who will ultimately decide the case’s outcome and any associated penalties. New York Attorney General Letitia James has sought a $250 million penalty against Trump’s businesses, alleging fraudulent practices.
It’s worth noting that Judge Engoron has a history of financial support for Democratic candidates, as reflected in his political donations.
Judge Engoron’s political donations have amounted to more than $5,000 over the course of the past 25 years, as initially reported by the Daily Wire. These contributions have predominantly been directed toward local Democratic committees. So with his most recent donation in 2018 going to Manhattan Democrats.
Additionally, his financial support has extended to individual Democratic candidates. And including former New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, former Governor David Paterson. And various state lawmakers, as highlighted in the publication’s report.
Furthermore, it has come to light through a circulating video on social media that Judge Engoron previously expressed a somewhat “controversial” perspective. And suggesting that he might make decisions based on his emotions. And potentially overrule a jury, although it’s important to consider the broader context and circumstances surrounding this statement.
In the video, Judge Engoron mentioned his ability to use a legal tool called “judgment notwithstanding the verdict.” This tool allows him to potentially intervene if he believes that a reasonable jury could not have come to a particular conclusion. He emphasized the importance of adhering to the law. Despite of being an impartial referee in his role, but also acknowledged the challenge of separating. And his personal emotions from the legal process. Ultimately, he stated that he possesses tools to navigate these complexities in his capacity as a judge.
