the 2024 NFL Draft

The 49ers are projected to have 11 picks in the 2024 NFL Draft , even after the acquisition of defensive end Chase Young on Tuesday.

San Francisco 49ers traded their third-round special compensatory pick to the Washington Commanders in exchange for Young, as confirmed by a league source to NBC Sports Bay Area.

The 49ers have effectively utilized the NFL’s compensatory formula and may reap future benefits from the addition of Young as well. Notably, the Commanders did not exercise Young’s fifth-year option, which means that the 49ers will have him for the remainder of the current season before he becomes an unrestricted free agent in March.

In such a scenario, if Young signs with another team as a free agent, the 49ers could potentially receive a compensatory pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. the 2024 NFL Draft

The third-round draft pick the 49ers are sending to Washington in 2024 (assuming Young passes his physical on Wednesday) is expected to be approximately the 100th overall pick. San Francisco acquired this “special compensatory” draft pick as part of the NFL’s initiative to promote minority hiring practices. The 49ers earned this draft pick when defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans and director of player personnel Ran Carthon departed the organization during the offseason.
