New York City Mayor Eric Adams, who has been one of the most vocal Democratic critics of President Joe Biden’s immigration policies. He has embarked on a four-day tour of three Latin American nations. This trip comes after Adams has consistently criticized President Biden for his approach to the migrant crisis that is affecting cities across the United States.
New York City is sending a clear message that it can no longer accommodate more migrants. Mayor Eric Adams emphasized this point during a press conference in Puebla. Mexico, where he spoke to a crowd of local and international reporters.
Adams stated, “Our trip here is to speak directly to the people of all the countries that are migrating: There is no more room in New York. Our hearts are endless, but our resources are not.”
New York City has been grappling with a significant influx of over 110,000 migrants who have arrived since the spring of 2022. This surge has strained shelters, depleted resources, and even led to proposed budget cuts. Currently, more than 60,000 migrants remain under the city’s care.
The migrant crisis has become a major challenge for Mayor Adams, straining his once-close relationship with President Biden. The two leaders haven’t communicated in months.
In response to this complex situation, Adams has taken matters into his own hands by embarking on a whirlwind tour through Mexico, Ecuador, and Colombia. This journey serves as a combination of fact-finding, public-service efforts, and an opportunity to promote his mayoral brand. The trip includes visiting the treacherous Darién Gap and even receiving an honorary degree in Puebla.
Mayor Adams is actively engaging with various stakeholders during his trip to Mexico. In addition to his interactions with business leaders and a meeting with a social service organization aiding migrants. He is joined by Jorge Islas López, the Consul General of Mexico in New York City.
Adams is keen on highlighting his expertise in foreign relations and countering skeptics who may question his credentials. He pointed to his recent meetings with dignitaries during the United Nations General Assembly as evidence of his diplomatic efforts.
