in competitive primaries

Once seen as a valuable endorsement for Republican candidates in competitive primaries, Kevin McCarthy’s endorsement has taken a turn and is now perceived by some as a liability by primary challengers.

Kevin McCarthy’s removal from the speakership has created an unexpected opportunity for primary contenders who are now taking advantage of the situation to challenge the frontrunners that had previously received McCarthy’s endorsement.

One such contender, Joe Earley, who is running against a candidate endorsed by McCarthy in West Virginia, expressed his perspective on the matter by stating, “Voters don’t want a McCarthy Republican. They want a true conservative. And this situation has exposed how poor a job that McCarthy has done. And that my opponent has refused to reject his endorsement.”

It’s worth noting that very few of McCarthy’s supporters or allies have stepped forward to defend him in this context.

Kevin McCarthy exerted his influence in competitive races at the outset of the 2024 election cycle by endorsing candidates for at least eight House seats. These endorsements included Tom Barrett in MI-07, state Rep. Heidi Kasama in NV-03, West Virginia state Treasurer Riley Moore in WV-02, former state Rep. Craig Riedel in OH-09, former Rep. Yvette Herrell in NM-02, Scott Baugh in CA-47, former Rep. Mayra Flores in TX-34.And Stockton Mayor Kevin Lincoln in CA-09.

These races, with the exception of the open primary in the heavily Republican WV-02 district. These races are all on the National Republican Congressional Committee’s (NRCC) target list. Kevin McCarthy is known for his prolific fundraising skills. And possesses an extensive political network, which had positioned him to provide substantial support to these endorsed candidates. Despite his removal from the role of House Speaker, it’s unlikely that his fundraising abilities. As well as political connections will suddenly disappear. However, some Republican congressional candidates view McCarthy’s ouster as an opportunity to use. It as ammunition against their opponents who had garnered his endorsement.

David Majewski, who had previously lost to Democratic Rep. Marcy Kaptur in 2022, reentered the primary race after briefly dropping out to care for his mother during her post-surgery recovery. Majewski had previously expressed frustration at the fact that Kevin McCarthy. And other House leadership members had endorsed Craig Riedel, one of his primary opponents. in competitive primaries

Yvette Herrell conveyed her sadness about the situation in a statement to POLITICO. And mentioning that McCarthy did not deserve to lose his job. Scott Baugh’s campaign declined to comment on the matter. And there was no response from the other campaigns when contacted for comment.
