Luis Garcia Villagran

Luis Garcia Villagran a self-proclaimed Evangelical Christian and radical activist, has been at the forefront of leading massive migrant caravans from Mexico to the US. Despite having once been sentenced to 40 years in prison, he has become a prominent figure in guiding tens of thousands of asylum-seekers to the US border.

In the most recent caravan, which set out on Christmas Eve, Villagran led an estimated 8,000 migrants, predicting that the number could nearly double to 15,000 along the journey. The media-savvy activist claims to prioritize the well-being of vulnerable individuals, particularly women and child migrants, while asserting that his actions align with the law.

Villagran, who heads the Center for Human Dignity, stated in a July 2022 interview that he had already guided 40,000 migrants to the border since September 2021. Despite his controversial past, he insists that he is not financed or assisted by external organizations and is motivated by his faith and the belief in migrants’ right to leave impoverished conditions.

Luis Garcia Villagran faced legal troubles in 1997 when he was arrested in the Mexican state of Chiapas on charges of kidnapping and conspiracy, which he vehemently denied. Despite being convicted and sentenced to 40 years in prison, he collaborated with human rights groups, appealed his case, and was eventually released in 2010. Luis Garcia Villagran

Villagran, who runs his activist group alongside his wife, Martha Martinez de la Fuente, claimed that he was tortured during his time in custody, and these experiences serve as motivation for his current mission. He stated that he was unfairly labeled as dangerous and held in maximum-security prisons until the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights demanded his release.

While in solitary confinement, Villagran suffered a detached retina, and he contends that the untreated condition led to the loss of sight in one eye. These personal struggles, he says, further fuel his commitment to his current advocacy efforts.

“The damage was repaired, and that is where the Center for Human Dignity was born,” he said.

A 2021 profile in Mexico Daily described Villagran and fellow organizer Irineo Mujica as media savvy tacticians who attempt to manage perceptions of the migrant movement in addition to the thousands in their charge.
