Earlier this month

Earlier this month Microsoft disclosed an odd printer bug that was affecting some users of Windows 10, Windows 11, and various Windows Server products. Affected PCs were seeing an HP printer installed, usually an HP LaserJet M101-M106, even when they weren’t actually using any kind of HP printer. This bug could overwrite the settings for whatever printer the user actually did have installed and also prompted the installation of an HP Smart printer app from the Microsoft Store.

Microsoft has yet to disclose the root cause of the problem, but it has clarified that the issue is not attributed to HP. However, the company has now provided a fix for users whose PCs were impacted by the bug. As of the latest information, users are required to download and run a dedicated troubleshooting tool, which is available on Microsoft’s support site.

The December 2023 Microsoft Printer Metadata Troubleshooter Tool is now accessible for all Windows versions affected by the printer issue. This tool is designed to eliminate all references to the phantom HP LaserJet model, provided that it is not already installed on the system. Additionally, the tool will remove the HP Smart app under the condition that there is no HP printer connected, and the app was installed after November 25, which is presumed to be the date when the bug started affecting systems. Following these steps should address the problem for users without an HP printer, without causing any issues for those who do use HP printers.

There are four versions of the troubleshooter available, catering to the 32-bit or 64-bit version of Arm or x86 Windows. Additionally, Microsoft plans to release another recommended troubleshooting tool in the coming weeks, specifically for Windows 11. This tool will address the problem upon user request without requiring a separate download.

Microsoft has assured users that despite the renaming and the download of the HP Smart tool, most basic printing functionality should continue to work as intended for those affected by the problem. However, users relying on their printer’s external app for additional settings or extra functionality may need to run the troubleshooting tool or manually uninstall the phantom HP printer and reinstall their own printer to restore proper functionality.
