Microsoft aimed to rebound

In 2023, Microsoft aimed to rebound from a relatively quiet 2022 by making strategic moves to bolster its position. The company made significant progress by releasing notable games, supporting its Game Pass subscription service, and finalizing the acquisition of Activision Blizzard.

However, the year also saw Microsoft facing challenges, including layoffs and legal battles. The focus on Game Pass and major acquisitions has positioned Xbox for a potentially impactful 2024, although it remains to be seen how these efforts will unfold and if any associated costs will be incurred.

For Xbox owners eagerly anticipating significant game releases, Microsoft’s portfolio of brands and studios delivered in 2023. Among the notable releases during the year were Redfall, a new installment in the Forza Motorsport series, Starfield, Hi-Fi Rush, Minecraft Legends, a remaster of Quake II, a substantial rally-themed expansion for Forza Horizon 5, significant updates for Halo Infinite, and a repackaged anniversary edition of the beloved fighter, Killer Instinct. Additionally, Microsoft succeeded in bringing Ghostwire: Tokyo, originally a PS5 exclusive, to Xbox and Game Pass, expanding the gaming options for the Xbox community.

Even if you aren’t a big fan of all of these games (looking at you Redfall…) there’s no denying that compared to last year’s paltry first-party line-up, 2023 was a banner year for Xbox Games Studios and Microsoft-owned Bethesda. It feels like all those studios Xbox owns were able to, at last, deliver new games alongside ones made by partners. Microsoft aimed to rebound

The consistent release of new games, both major and minor, in 2023 has been a positive development for Microsoft, particularly with its Game Pass service. Game Pass’s appeal lies in its promise of a steady stream of new titles, and in 2022, Xbox faced challenges in meeting those expectations, relying heavily on third-party games to compensate for delays in major first-party releases like Starfield and Redfall. However, the trend shifted in 2023, with Microsoft successfully introducing big new games into Game Pass every few months, including significant first-party titles. This approach has likely contributed to the service’s appeal and value for subscribers.
