The United States is currently in the midst of the respiratory virus season, and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is cautioning that the peak is yet to come. With low vaccination rates, a considerable number of individuals are susceptible to severe illness, placing additional strain on healthcare systems.

The CDC highlights a rapid increase in COVID-19 hospitalizations. Since the summer, there has been a notable uptick in cases of multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C), a condition associated with COVID-19. Concurrently, influenza activity is on the rise across most regions of the country. Moreover, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) activity remains elevated in numerous areas, as reported in the CDC’s update on its website this Thursday.

Certain regions in the country are experiencing a significant strain on pediatric hospital beds, with occupancy rates approaching levels observed at the same time last year. Should these trends persist, the conclusion of this month may witness a renewed challenge for emergency departments and hospitals. The escalating strain on the healthcare system raises concerns that individuals with other critical health conditions may encounter delays in accessing necessary care. the US Centers

“We’re seeing a potpourri of respiratory illnesses. We’ve see RSV, influenza, and COVID. So the net effect is a lot of people with viral infections now,” said Dr. Jonathan Pinskey at Endeavor Health Edward Hospital.

Among all age groups, the CDC said hospitalizations in the last four weeks are up 200% for influenza, 51% for COVID-19 and 60% for RSV.c
