The pre holiday box

The pre holiday box office is enjoying a delightful kickoff, courtesy of Timothée Chalamet’s portrayal of the eccentric chocolatier, Wonka.

While it may not have claimed the top spot in the official rankings by Chalamet’s mom, the fantasy musical is undeniably captivating audiences on a global scale. With an impressive $39 million domestic debut, the film, directed by Paul King of Paddington 2 fame, has amassed a total of $151.4 million worldwide.

This is a promising start, especially for a musical, a genre that has faced challenges at the box office in recent years. The film’s marketing strategy, including downplaying the song-and-dance elements in trailers, appears to be resonating with audiences. The prequel provides a glimpse into the origins of Willy Wonka, the enchanting candyman from Roald Dahl’s timeless novel, “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.”

In the film Wonka, emerging R&B sensation Timothée Chalamet showcases his musical prowess, diverging from rap to channel the spirit of Gene Wilder.

Through his performance, Chalamet engages in whimsical activities like milking giraffes, captivating Oompa Loompas, and enchanting audiences with his chocolate creations, immersing them in a world of pure imagination. The star-studded cast also includes Hugh Grant, Olivia Colman, Sally Hawkins, Keegan-Michael Key, and Calah Lane. The pre holiday box

Securing the second spot, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes accumulates an additional $5.8 million, bringing its total to $145.2 million domestically and $300.5 million globally. Serving as another origin story, the film breathes new life into the young adult dystopian genre by delving into the backstory of Coriolanus Snow, the future overseer of Katniss Everdeen’s journey in the arena. The movie, led by Rachel Zegler, takes on a musical essence with folksy tunes resonating with a not-so-subtle touch of rebellion.

Elsewhere, legendary filmmaker Hayao Miyakazi made his return to the box office after retiring (not for the first time) in 2013.
