The increasing popularity of location tracking apps, like Life360, indicates that many young people are becoming more comfortable with the idea of their parents being able to track their whereabouts continuously.
Downloads of Life360 have doubled over the past two years, with approximately one in nine U.S. families, totaling 33 million individuals, now utilizing this app, as reported by The Wall Street Journal.
Additionally, other apps such as Google’s Family Link and Apple’s Find My are being embraced by Generation Z, allowing them to share their location with parents and friends as they go to school, drive, or even when on dates.
These tracking tools offer various features, including the ability to send alerts for events such as car crashes, which can contribute to enhanced safety and peace of mind for both young people and their families.
Location tracking can be turned off and on so that a user can maintain privacy when they want it, but according to a 2022 survey carried out by The Harris Poll, 16% of US adults have the setting activated all the time.
A survey of 1,200 adults conducted by Life360 found 54% of respondents thought it necessary or usually appropriate for parents to ask their children to share their location at all times.
The embrace of location tracking is thought to be related to rising levels of anxiety among younger generations.
“The turbulence of Gen Z’s adolescence spawned a mental health crisis that was only amplified by the pandemic, social media, and the 24-hour news cycle,” said Dr Michele Borba, a educational psychologist and spokesperson for Life360.
In these uncertain times, Generation Z has developed a strong preference for the additional layer of security that location sharing apps offer. A survey conducted by Life360 revealed that 94% of Gen Z individuals recognize the advantages of location sharing, with over half considering these apps as synonymous with safety.
