experienced the loss

Over the past four days, Russia experienced the loss of a minimum of 68 armored vehicles in Ukraine, which included eight tanks. Even within the context of Russia’s extensive 21-month conflict with Ukraine, this represents a significant and devastating setback for Russian forces. During the same timeframe, Ukraine’s reported losses amounted to only a fraction of Russia’s, with a ratio of approximately one-tenth.

The tally of 68 destroyed and abandoned Russian vehicles represents only those that have been confirmed by Andrew Perpetua, an open-source intelligence analyst, through photos and videos posted on social media. The actual losses incurred by the Russian forces are likely significantly higher, reflecting a magnitude of devastation that exceeds the verified count.

The Ukrainian general staff, on their part, asserted that their forces managed to destroy a staggering 175 Russian armored vehicles in the short span between Thursday and Friday, with 55 of those being tanks. When we consider that, on average, the Russians had been losing only about three tanks per day since February 2022, the recent rate of losses is nearly 20 times higher. Additionally, Moscow has reportedly acknowledged the loss of at least five warplanes over Avdiivka.

The loss of manpower in this conflict aligns with the magnitude of vehicle losses. The general staff in Kyiv reported that 1,380 Russian soldiers lost their lives in Ukraine during a 24-hour period, which concluded on Friday. This figure represents one of the most substantial single-day casualties on either side of the broader conflict.

The surge in Russian casualties is clearly linked to a specific operation. Over the past couple of weeks, seven to eight Russian regiments and brigades, each comprising up to 2,000 troops, have been engaged in an effort to encircle and isolate one of the most heavily fortified cities in independent Ukraine: Avdiivka. This city is situated just northwest of the Russian-occupied Donetsk in the eastern Donbas region of Ukraine. experienced the loss

Continuing to deploy regiments into the Avdiivka operation may eventually result in the capture of the city by Russian forces. However, the significant casualties they are enduring have the potential to disrupt Russian military operations along the 600-mile front line in Ukraine.

As the Royal United Services Institute in London aptly noted, “So long as this high casualty rate can be maintained,” it becomes conceivable that Russia’s capability to train a sufficient number of new troops to meet the required standards for effective offensive actions could be hampered.
