In 1979, the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) first proposed the idea of World Tourism Day, but its official celebration commenced in 1980. This annual event has since become a globally recognized occasion for promoting and celebrating the significance of tourism in international relations and cultural exchange.

On World Tourism Day, countries and numerous organizations collaborate to promote tourism as a means for individuals to rediscover and explore aspects such as history, luxury, heritage, cultures, places, and adventure. World Tourism Day Sept 27

According to the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the theme for World Tourism Day 2023 is “Tourism and green investment.” This theme underscores the critical need for increased and more precisely targeted investments to support the Sustainable Development Goals, which represent the United Nations’ vision for a better world by 2030.

In response to the profound disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic within the tourism sector, there is an opportunity to redefine and realign the focus and narratives surrounding tourism investments. This reevaluation aims to pave the way for a more sustainable future, benefiting not only people but also the planet and prosperity, as articulated on the UNWTO website.

In 2023, Saudi Arabia, as the chair of the UNWTO Executive Council, will host a gathering of over 500 government officials and industry leaders from 120 countries in Riyadh, from September 27 to 28.

Tourism serves as a catalyst for mutual understanding, the construction of bridges, and the preservation of cultural heritage and environmental conservation. It plays a pivotal role in creating a more harmonious global society while also fostering digitalization and innovation.

The UNWTO website emphasizes that the global tourism industry will require millions of hospitality graduates annually up to 2030. Additionally, there will be a need for an extra 800,000 jobs each year that will require specialized vocational training. This underscores the importance of investing in people, as they form the fundamental cornerstone of the tourism sector. Such investment ensures that anyone aspiring to be part of the industry has equal access to quality tourism training, regardless of their location around the world.

The World Tourism Day 2023 is an vital platform for the world to rejoice the sector’s successes after COVID-19.
