In a surprising political comeback, a populist former Prime Minister and his leftist party have emerged victorious in early parliamentary elections in Slovakia. Robert Fico, the former Prime Minister, and his Smer, or Direction, Party secured 22.9% of the votes, granting them 42 seats in the 150-seat parliament, as confirmed by the Slovak Statistics Office’s complete results announcement on Sunday. Their campaign characterized by a pro-Russian stance and an anti-American message.

Taking the second position in the elections was the Progressive Slovakia party, a liberal and pro-West newcomer, which garnered 18% of the votes, translating to 32 seats. The left-wing hals party, led by Fico’s former deputy, Peter Pellegrini, secured the third position with 14.7% of the votes.

The outcome of the parliamentary elections in Slovakia turned out to be a significant win for Fico. And despite initial predictions of a close race. His campaign managed to attract voters who leaned towards the far-right end of the political spectrum. Which contributed to his relatively large victory.

With no single party securing an outright majority of seats in parliament. So, the formation of a coalition government will be necessary. Traditionally, it is the president’s role to invite the election’s winner to attempt to assemble a government.

Fico has already expressed his readiness to engage in talks with other political parties to explore the possibility of forming a coalition government. And a process that is expected to commence once President Zuzana Caputova extends the invitation to him. The outcome of these negotiations will play a pivotal role in shaping Slovakia’s political landscape in the coming years.

Former Prime Minister Robert Fico’s political stance marked by opposition. And to EU sanctions on Russia and skepticism about Ukraine’s ability to expel Russian troops from its territory. Fico also advocates for preventing Ukraine from joining NATO. Instead, he suggests that the European Union and the United States should refrain from sending arms to Ukraine. And should, instead, leverage their influence to facilitate a negotiated peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine.
