An expansive storm

An expansive storm system is causing widespread winter weather issues in the Northeast and other parts of the Eastern US. The storm has resulted in power outages affecting over 450,000 homes and businesses, with significant numbers in New York and Pennsylvania. The severe weather has already led to at least four reported deaths in Alabama, Georgia, and North Carolina.

The snowfall is expected to continue in the Midwest and Great Lakes, with blizzard conditions in the Northwest. Fierce winds, affecting over 100 million people, are anticipated along the East Coast, potentially causing power outages and coastal flooding. Heavy rainfall is fueling flood concerns, particularly in the western Carolinas, Mid-Atlantic, and Northeast. Major cities like New York City and Philadelphia may experience flooding, with dangerous driving conditions in parts of New England and the interior Northeast due to snow and strong winds.

The storm has generated tornado reports and caused significant flight disruptions, with over 1,350 flights canceled and more than 8,700 delayed. The situation is dynamic, with ongoing rescue efforts and a focus on managing the diverse weather threats across the affected regions.

Heavy, wet snow is forecasted to continue sweeping across high terrain in the Northeast into Wednesday morning, posing risks due to its potential to cling to trees and power lines. Combined with gusty winds exceeding 55 mph, this may lead to power outages and scattered tree damage, warns the National Weather Service. Conditions are expected to gradually improve as the system moves out on Wednesday, but rain and strong winds are anticipated to persist into the afternoon in the Northeast. New York Governor Hochul expressed concern about the storm being “life-threatening,” particularly for those enduring freezing temperatures without power, as restoration efforts face challenges due to ongoing high winds.
