The plagiarism allegations came not from her academic peers but her political foes, led by conservatives who sought to oust Gay and put her career under intense scrutiny in hopes of finding a fatal flaw. Christopher Rufo, a conservative activist instrumental in orchestrating this effort, celebrated the departure of Claudine Gay as a triumph in his ongoing campaign against elite higher education institutions. On X, formerly Twitter, he posted “SCALPED,” depicting Gay as a trophy and alluding to a brutal historical practice adopted by white colonists in their attempts to eradicate Native Americans.
Expressing his determination, Rufo stated on X that the fight would resume, outlining a “playbook” aimed at challenging institutions perceived as excessively liberal by conservatives. His latest focus centers on initiatives promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in both educational and business realms.
“We cannot relent until DEI ideology is eradicated from every institution in America,” he emphasized. In a separate post, Rufo introduced a new “plagiarism hunting fund,” pledging to expose issues within the Ivy League and advocating for the restoration of truth over racialist ideologies as the paramount principle in academic life.
