Egypt President Abdel Fattah

Egypt President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has been confirmed to serve a third term as the leader of the Middle East’s most populous nation. The announcement came after the completion of the vote count in the election conducted between December 10 and 12.

According to the National Elections Authority, President Sisi secured an overwhelming victory with 89.6 percent of the vote, affirming his continued leadership in Egypt.

In Egypt’s recent presidential election, the voter turnout reached an “unprecedented” 66.8 percent, according to Hazem Badawy, the head of the National Elections Authority. President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, a former army chief who has been in power for a decade, secured an overwhelming victory with 89.6 percent of the vote. Despite various crises, including the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza and Egypt’s severe economic challenges, Sisi faced no serious opposition. Egypt President Abdel Fattah

The election featured three other candidates, none of whom were high profile, and the runner-up, Hazem Omar, leader of the Republican People’s Party, received 4.5 percent of the vote. The political landscape in Egypt has been marked by a decade-long crackdown on dissent, eliminating significant challenges to Sisi’s leadership.

Next came Farid Zahran, leader of the left-leaning Egyptian Social Democratic Party, and Abdel-Sanad Yamama from the Wafd, a century-old but relatively marginal party.

Sisi is now set to serve his third – and, according to the constitution, final – term in office, starting in April.
