War cabinet minister Benny Gantz conveyed to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Monday that the surge in attacks by Hezbollah necessitates a decisive Israeli response, as rocket assaults from the Lebanese terror group persistently target towns along Israel’s northern border.
According to an Israeli statement, Gantz emphasized that the heightened aggression and increased attacks by Iranian-backed Hezbollah demand Israel’s action to eliminate the threat to the civilian population in northern Israel. Gantz also highlighted the crucial role the international community must play, urging it to act to ensure that the state of Lebanon puts an end to such aggression along its border.

The conveyed message appears to signify a heightened Israeli push on the United States and other international partners to facilitate the restoration of calm along the border through diplomatic channels. Jerusalem is seeking the involvement of the US, France, or other foreign mediators to broker the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701.
The initiative, UN Security Council Resolution 1701, marked the conclusion of the Second Lebanon War in 2006. It stipulated the disarmament of all non-state armed forces in Lebanon, specifically Hezbollah. Additionally, the resolution called for the area between the Israel-Lebanon border and the Litani River to be cleared of all armed forces, except for the Lebanese army and the UN’s peacekeeping mission UNIFIL.
However, Hezbollah has consistently violated this resolution over the years, accumulating weapons and deploying forces near the border. Enforcement by UNIFIL has been limited, raising concerns about the effectiveness of the resolution in maintaining peace in the region.
