The UK ruling Conservative party is in disarray after the government published emergency legislation aimed at allowing a controversial deportation scheme to Rwanda to move forward.
The political standing of UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak appeared precarious on Wednesday following the resignation of Immigration Minister Robert Jenrick. Jenrick cited “strong disagreements with the direction” of the government’s immigration policy as the reason for his resignation. The “Safety of Rwanda Bill” has been introduced with the aim of addressing a UK Supreme Court ruling from November 15, which declared the government’s plan to send numerous asylum seekers and migrants to Rwanda as unlawful. The draft bill categorizes Rwanda as a safe country and is scheduled for expedited consideration in the House of Commons. Notably, it circumvents specific sections of the Human Rights Act (HRA) and any other domestic law or international law interpretations by the court or tribunal.
Additionally, the proposed legislation grants courts the authority to disregard injunctions from the European Court of Human Rights that seek to prevent flights associated with the controversial asylum and migration scheme. This legislative move represents an effort to navigate around legal obstacles and proceed with the government’s plans regarding asylum seekers and migrants in relation to Rwanda.
