Javier Milei will meet

Argentina right wing President-elect Javier Milei will meet with President Joe Biden national security adviser on Tuesday in Washington, according to the White House.

National Security Council spokesman John Kirby informed reporters on Monday that the President-elect of Argentina, Milei, is set to meet with White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan and other administration officials. However, President Biden, occupied with travel to Georgia and Colorado on Tuesday, will not have a meeting with Milei.

The Treasury Department announced that Milei’s economic policy advisers would engage with senior Treasury officials on Tuesday to discuss the incoming administration’s economic policy priorities.

Kirby stated, “We want to continue to look for ways to cooperate with Argentina. Argentina is a healthy and vibrant partner in this hemisphere on many, many issues. And so we’re looking forward to obviously hearing what the president-elect’s ideas are and where he wants to go on policy issues and making sure that we have a chance to keep that channel of communication open.”

A spokesman for Milei, who preferred to remain anonymous, clarified that the meetings in Washington were protocol-driven to explain the economic plan, focusing on fiscal adjustment, monetary reform, state reform, and deregulation. Emphasizing that the purpose is not seeking financing, the spokesman highlighted the intention to provide insight into the economic priorities of the incoming administration.

Milei, often likened to former President Donald Trump, won the election earlier this month and is slated for inauguration on December 10. He has expressed positive sentiments toward Trump, mentioning a congratulatory call where the former president expressed the intent to travel to Argentina for a face-to-face meeting. The White House shared that Biden congratulated Milei and discussed the strong relationship between the United States and Argentina, covering economic issues, regional and multilateral cooperation, as well as shared priorities like human rights, food security, and clean energy investment.

Milei’s visit to Washington primarily revolves around discussions with International Monetary Fund officials. During his time in New York, he met with former President Bill Clinton, focusing on the future of Argentina and the broader region, with Clinton expressing good wishes for Milei’s endeavors.
