In the aftermath of a significant departure of advertisers last week, which included major media companies worldwide, Elon Musk, the owner of X, is taking legal action against the progressive watchdog group, Media Matters. The lawsuit, filed on Monday, contends that Media Matters distorted the likelihood of ads appearing alongside extremist content on X. Musk alleges that the group’s testing methodology was not reflective of the real user experience on the site. This legal action comes in response to Media Matters’ analysis that brought attention to antisemitic and pro-Nazi content on X, a report perceived to have played a substantial role in the extensive and damaging brand exodus.
“Media Matters knowingly and maliciously manufactured side-by-side images depicting advertisers’ posts on X Corp.’s social media platform beside Neo-Nazi and white-nationalist fringe content and then portrayed these manufactured images as if they were what typical X users experience on the platform,” the complaint filed in the US District Court for the Northern District of Texas said. “Media Matters designed both these images and its resulting media strategy to drive advertisers from the platform and destroy X Corp.” included major media
The legal action extends to both Media Matters and Eric Hananoki, its senior investigative reporter, as co-defendants. The lawsuit seeks a court order compelling Media Matters to remove its analysis from its website. It accuses Media Matters of interference with X’s contracts with advertisers, disrupting economic relationships, and unlawfully disparaging X.
Media Matters President Angelo Carusone responded with a statement on Monday evening, expressing the group’s commitment to defending itself against the lawsuit.
