A group of 28 premature babies has been evacuated from al-Shifa Hospital in the besieged Gaza Strip and taken to Egypt for urgent treatment as Palestinian officials say Israeli forces have attacked another hospital in northern Gaza.
The infants were previously under care at al-Shifa, the largest medical facility in Gaza. Unfortunately, a number of them lost their lives when their incubators ceased to function due to a shortage of fuel. This occurred amidst the breakdown of medical services during the Israeli military’s ground and air assault on Gaza City.
On Sunday, the infants were moved to Al-Helal L-Emirati Maternity Hospital in Rafah, southern Gaza, with the aim of stabilizing their conditions before their journey to Egypt via the Rafah border crossing on Monday.
A spokesperson from the World Health Organization (WHO) informed Reuters that three infants are still under treatment at the Emirati hospital. These infants are actively battling severe infections and require ongoing healthcare. Gaza Strip and taken
In the preceding week, Israeli forces took control of al-Shifa Hospital, Gaza’s largest medical facility, under the pretext of searching for a purported Hamas tunnel network and command center allegedly located beneath the complex. Hamas has refuted these claims.
Amidst the Israeli operation, a significant number of patients, medical staff, and displaced individuals evacuated al-Shifa over the weekend, relocating to the southern Gaza Strip. Subsequently, concerns were raised by al-Shifa doctors regarding the conditions in the neonatal ward, citing a shortage of clean water and medicines. Regrettably, eight premature infants have reportedly succumbed to the challenging circumstances, according to hospital officials.
