Law enforcement clashed with protesters calling for a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war outside of the Washington headquarters of the Democratic National Committee Wednesday night after authorities said the demonstration turned violent and lawmakers were evacuated from the building.
Last night, six officers were treated for injuries, ranging from minor cuts to being pepper-sprayed and punched. One individual has been arrested for assaulting an officer. The US Capitol Police, in conjunction with the DC Metropolitan Police, released a statement expressing appreciation for the officers who confronted illegal and violent protesters, preventing further escalation and ensuring the safety of everyone in the area. Capitol Police reported that officers worked diligently to restrain approximately 150 individuals engaged in illegal and violent protests, providing protection and escorting members of Congress, including top House Democrats, from the area. Among those evacuated were Democratic leaders such as House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, House Minority Whip Katherine Clark, and Pete Aguilar, the No. 3 Democrat. As the clash between protesters and police unfolded, Democratic leaders, including Suzan DelBene, chairwoman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, and Michigan Representative Debbie Dingell, were present inside. Around 10 members, including the aforementioned leaders, were holding a meeting with House candidates who were in town for training sessions and Democratic networking activities.
