the Law and Justice

Almost a month after the election that defeated the Law and Justice (PiS) party, Poland’s parliament held its inaugural session and voted in a new leadership showing that power has decisively shifted away from the old ruling party.

The parliament has recently appointed its new speaker, Szymon Hołownia, a former TV host. Hołownia secured his position with the backing of 265 deputies, while the Law and Justice (PiS) candidate, Elżbieta Witek, received only 193 votes in the 460-member parliament.

In his inaugural address as speaker, a role that wields significant influence over parliamentary proceedings, Hołownia pledged a resolute departure from the established practices of the Law and Justice party, which has held power since 2015.

As a symbol of the sweeping changes, the removal of police barriers that had long restricted public access to the parliament buildings marked a significant shift. This move, unprecedented in years, reflects the new speaker Szymon Hołownia’s commitment to openness. He also vowed to enhance accessibility for journalists, whose freedom to navigate the parliamentary halls had been significantly curtailed under the Law and Justice party (PiS). the Law and Justice

In addition, Hołownia pledged to eliminate the legislative “freezer,” a practice where the speaker would block the progression of inconvenient bills. He emphasized his determination to transform the legislature from being a mere “voting machine for the government” and assured that the parliament would not serve as a breeding ground for corruption or a platform for contempt.

Expressing a straightforward goal, Hołownia stated, “My goal and program are simple. I would like parents, when the parliament appears on TV, not to blindfold their children and plug their ears.”

His election underscores the control of the legislative agenda by the opposition three-party coalition, comprising the centrist Civic Coalition led by Donald Tusk, the likely next prime minister, the center-right Third Way grouping including Hołownia’s party, and the Left. This shift signifies a significant turning point in the political landscape.
