On Wednesday, an unprecedented event unfolded as over 75,000 unionized employees of Kaiser Permanente. One of the largest not-for-profit healthcare providers in the United States, went on strike. This strike stands as the largest in the history of healthcare worker protests in the U.S.
The striking employees spread across multiple states, including California, Colorado, Washington, Virginia, Oregon, and Washington, D.C. And represented by a coalition of unions that collectively account for 40% of Kaiser Permanente’s workforce. The majority of these striking workers are located in West Coast states. The strike officially commenced at 6 am local time and slated to continue until Saturday morning.
Although bargaining sessions between the coalition and Kaiser Permanente concluded on Wednesday without a resolution. it’s worth noting that some tentative agreements were reached during the negotiations, indicated by Kaiser Permanente in a statement released on Wednesday.
In response to the ongoing strike, Kaiser Permanente issued a statement acknowledging . And though a final contract settlement not reached, they had successfully arrived at several tentative agreements during the bargaining process. The statement emphasized that their offers thus far have designed to address the unions’ top priorities.
Furthermore, Kaiser Permanente expressed its commitment to collaborate with union leaders to promptly resume negotiations. The statement stated, “We will work with union leaders to reconvene bargaining as soon as possible.”
Caroline Lucas, who serves as a spokesperson for the Coalition of Kaiser Permanente Unions, released a statement on Wednesday night. In it, she emphasized that frontline healthcare workers were eagerly awaiting a substantive response from Kaiser executives regarding key priorities, such as ensuring safe staffing, protecting incumbent healthcare workers from outsourcing, and establishing fair wages to combat turnover. Lucas made it clear that the healthcare workers within the coalition remained prepared to meet at any time. As of now, the strike continues, and no negotiation sessions scheduled at this moment.
The unprecedented strike comes at a time of heightened labor activity across the United States, with tens of thousands of workers across multiple industries taking to the picket lines for better pay and benefits. In the wake of pandemic, however, health care workers in particular have been fighting for safer and more secure work environments. They are demanding improved staffing levels, arguing that current staff shortages are compromising patient care and taking many workers to a breaking point.
The picket lines during this strike comprise a diverse range of employees, including nursing staff, dietary workers, receptionists, optometrists, and pharmacists. The decision to strike follows the expiration of the workers’ union contracts at 11:59 pm PT on September 30. Negotiations between the union and Kaiser Permanente persisted into Wednesday. As confirmed by James Santos, who serves as the field coordinator for the coalition of Kaiser unions in Virginia. However, as of his statement, no agreement had been reached to prevent the strike from taking place.
