The Navajo Nation

The Navajo Nation one of the nation’s largest Indigenous tribes, is asking that human remains not be placed on the moon as planned by two private companies scheduled next week.

The upcoming mission by United Launch Alliance and Astrobotic, scheduled to launch the Peregrine lander toward the moon on Monday, has faced controversy as it includes sets of human DNA and remains collected by private companies Celestis and Elysium Space. After learning about the mission, the Navajo Nation president, Buu Nygren, filed a complaint with NASA and the U.S. Department of Transportation, describing the inclusion of human remains as “an act of desecration.” The moon holds sacred significance among Navajo and other Indigenous tribes.

NASA, under its Commercial Lunar Payload Services program, lacks oversight over the payloads included in commercial flights. White House officials met with Navajo Nation officials on Friday, and Nygren emphasized the federal government’s responsibility to consult with Indigenous tribes regarding missions involving human remains on the moon.

Celestis CEO Charles M. Chafer dismissed the concerns, stating that individual religious beliefs should not dictate space missions. The controversy highlights the challenges and ethical considerations surrounding the inclusion of human remains in space missions. The Navajo Nation

The National Rifle Association (NRA), a once-powerful lobbying force, is facing a civil trial over allegations of fraud and mismanagement. The group’s CEO announced his resignation on Friday, and the NRA is grappling with a decline in influence and impact in Washington.

The trial raises significant challenges for the NRA, as it navigates legal troubles while also dealing with internal leadership changes. The organization has played a prominent role in shaping gun policy in the United States, but recent controversies and legal issues have led to internal upheaval and a diminished standing in the political landscape.
