Tesla is issuing a recall for over 1.6 million electric vehicles, including Model S, X, 3, and Y, in China due to issues with their automatic assisted steering and door latch controls.
The State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) in China disclosed the recall on Friday, stating that Tesla Motors in Beijing and Shanghai would address the problems through remote upgrades.
The move aims to rectify concerns related to the mentioned vehicle features, underlining Tesla’s commitment to ensuring the safety and functionality of its vehicles in the Chinese market.
China’s State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) highlighted the concerns leading to the recall, stating, “For vehicles within the scope of this recall, when the automatic assisted steering function is turned on, the driver may misuse the level two combined assisted driving function, increasing the risk of vehicle collision and posing a safety hazard.” Tesla is issuing
The recall extends to 7,538 imported Tesla models produced between October 26, 2022, and November 16, 2023. These vehicles were identified to have a “problem with the door unlock logic controls,” indicating a potential issue with door latch mechanisms.
This recall follows a previous incident in 2022 when Tesla recalled nearly 128,000 cars in China due to a defect related to the rear motor inverter. The series of recalls underscores Tesla’s commitment to addressing safety concerns and maintaining the integrity of its vehicles in the Chinese market.
China is a significant market and manufacturing centre for Tesla, and the company’s CEO, Elon Musk, has built close ties with Chinese officials even as US-China relations have soured.
Tesla’s Shanghai production facility, its first “gigafactory” to be built abroad, delivered about 947,000 vehicles in 2023, Chinese state news agency Xinhua reported earlier this week.
