In the early stages of their journey through Faerun in Baldur’s Gate 3, players are confronted with a challenging decision. Upon meeting characters like Shadowheart, Astarion, and Gale, they must decide whether to raid or save the Emerald Grove, a camp teeming with tiefling refugees.
Opting to sack the Grove provides the opportunity to recruit the popular character Minthara, a choice that has left players unsettled enough to devise a workaround, exploiting a game bug to include her in their party. However, some players, particularly those immersed in roleplaying, find themselves pondering the motivations behind choosing to attack the Grove and grapple with the moral implications of such a decision.
In a Reddit post called “How do you justify sacking the Grove in fiction?” Redditor ‘Katsnplants’ admitted that they were working for an evil run to get Minthara, but they couldn’t really figure out a “logical reason why”: “The only lead we have for curing ourselves is Halsin. Minthara doesn’t offer an alternative (beyond Gut, which…ya know) so you’re basically nuking your only lead,” they explained. the early stages
Yet, players swiftly noted that Larian Studios incorporated alternative choices that could facilitate role-playing as an evil character. Some players highlighted that establishing a connection with Lae’zel offers the main character an additional avenue to address the tadpole infection, providing a different “solution.” Others argued that simply role-playing as a Drow, particularly a male Drow, might be reason enough to align with Minthara’s directives without further questioning.
“I can relate to this completely. My male Drow was simply captivated by Minthara and obediently said, ‘Yes, Ma’am.’ When addressing Zevlor, he made it clear it was nothing personal,” confessed Redditor ‘ODean97.’
Baldur’s Gate 3 enthusiasts also articulated that aligning with the Cult of the Absolute during an evil playthrough served as sufficient justification for raiding the Grove. “Honestly, all you need to justify it is selfishness. The cult of the absolute is the most promising lead for your own issues. Getting closer to the absolute presents the best chance of finding a cure. The concerns of the druids and tieflings aren’t your problem,” stated ‘Shadowy_insights.’
