South Korean opposition leader Lee Jae-myung faced a harrowing incident as he was stabbed in the neck during a visit to the southeastern port city of Busan. Lee, who leads the main opposition Democratic Party, was attacked by a man who emerged from the crowd as he walked with journalists on Tuesday morning. The assailant targeted the left side of Lee’s neck.

Following the attack, Lee was promptly airlifted to a hospital in Seoul for medical attention. While emergency officials have indicated that he is not in critical condition, the exact status of his health remains unknown at this time. The incident has sparked concerns and heightened tensions, prompting a closer examination of the circumstances surrounding the attack on the prominent South Korean political figure.

Disturbing images in South Korean media depict 59-year-old Lee Jae-myung lying on his back with closed eyes, surrounded by officials, while one person presses a cloth against his neck. Democratic Party spokesman Kwon Chil-seung reported that Lee was being flown to Seoul National University in the capital after initial emergency treatment at Pusan National University Hospital.

Medical staff at the latter hospital expressed concern about potential damage to a jugular vein, which carries blood from the head to the heart. Kwon stated, “There is concern that there could be large hemorrhage or additional hemorrhage, according to medical staff.” South Korean opposition

The attack occurred while Lee was touring the proposed site of an airport in Busan. The assailant, wearing a paper crown with Lee’s name on it, approached him initially for an autograph before launching the attack with a weapon estimated to be between 20 and 30 cm (8 and 12 inches) long. The assailant was promptly arrested at the scene but has reportedly refused to provide any insight into his motives during police questioning, as reported by daily Busan Ilbo.
