Denmark’s Queen Margrethe II has taken the unexpected decision to abdicate her role early in 2024, concluding a reign that spanned over five decades. In her traditional New Year’s Eve address broadcast on Danish television, the 83-year-old monarch revealed her intention to pass the throne to her son, Crown Prince Frederik. The catalyst for this decision was a back surgery she underwent in February 2023, prompting contemplation about the future.
“After 52 years as Queen of Denmark, the impact is undeniable – both on anyone and myself! The passage of time takes its toll, and the challenges increase. One’s capacity to undertake tasks diminishes compared to the past,” she explained. Reflecting on her back surgery, she expressed gratitude for the competent health professionals who ensured a successful procedure but acknowledged that it prompted considerations about succession.
“I have reached the conclusion that now is the appropriate moment,” Queen Margrethe declared. “On January 14, 2024 – precisely 52 years since I ascended the throne following my beloved father’s passing – I will step down as Queen of Denmark, passing the mantle to my son, Crown Prince Frederik.”
