North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has directed the military, including its nuclear program, to hasten war preparations in response to what he perceives as unprecedented confrontational actions by the United States. Kim made this announcement during an ongoing meeting of the country’s ruling Workers’ Party.
According to the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), Kim outlined “militant tasks for the People’s Army and the munitions industry, nuclear weapons, and civil defense sectors to further accelerate war preparations.” The move underscores heightened tensions and reflects North Korea’s response to perceived provocations by the United States.
Kim Jong Un emphasized that the “military situation” on the Korean peninsula has reached an “extreme” point due to “unprecedented” confrontations with the United States, according to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). The report did not provide specific details regarding the nature of the preparations.
In response to the perceived threat, South Korea, Japan, and the United States have strengthened political and defense cooperation throughout the year, particularly in light of North Korea’s record-breaking series of weapons tests. The three nations have activated a system to share real-time data on North Korean missile launches. Additionally, a U.S. nuclear-powered submarine recently arrived in the South Korean port city of Busan, and joint drills involving Washington’s long-range bombers with Seoul and Tokyo have been conducted. North Korea, on the other hand, achieved several milestones, including the successful launch of its first military spy satellite on the third attempt and the testing of the solid-fueled Hwasong-18, its most advanced intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM). The country also enshrined its nuclear power status in the constitution.
Kim Jong Un, earlier this week, characterized 2023 as a “year of great turn and great change,” foreseeing “eye-opening victories” for Pyongyang. The developments indicate an escalation of tensions and military posturing in the region.
