the Netherlands announced

On Friday, the Netherlands announced its decision to provide Ukraine with 18 F-16 fighter jets to enhance its defense against the invading forces of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Prime Minister Mark Rutte shared this development in a message on X (formerly Twitter), stating that he had informed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky about the decision.

Officials from both the Ukrainian government and the United States have emphasized the “game-changing” potential of the F-16s for Zelensky’s forces. Zelensky had been seeking these jets for an extended period, and while President Joe Biden initially resisted the requests, an agreement was reached in May for NATO allies, including the Netherlands, to provide Ukraine with F-16s and offer training for Ukrainian pilots.

In August, the Netherlands and Denmark became the first countries to pledge F-16s to Ukraine before Belgium and Norway later said they would also donate donate some of the their F-16s to Kyiv’s forces. Last month, Romania opened a military center to train Ukrainian pilots on how to fly F-16s.

“The delivery of F-16s is one of the most important elements of the agreements made on military support for Ukraine,” Rutte said in his X message. “This decision confirms the Netherlands’ undiminished commitment to providing Ukraine with the support it needs to respond to the ongoing Russian aggression.” the Netherlands announced

While Prime Minister Rutte did not specify a timeline for the delivery of the F-16 fighter jets, he highlighted that certain prerequisites, including obtaining an export permit and meeting “a number of other criteria,” must be fulfilled before the aircraft can be sent to Ukraine.

Newsweek reached out to the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Friday for comment via email.

As of now, Ukraine has been employing Soviet-era MiG and Sukhoi aircraft in its conflict against Russian forces. Military experts suggest that the introduction of newer and more advanced F-16s would represent a substantial upgrade for President Zelensky’s troops.
