The World Health Organization (WHO) has characterized the emergency department at the al-Shifa hospital in northern Gaza as a “bloodbath,” emphasizing the critical need for intervention. The hospital, heavily impacted by Israeli bombardments, is in urgent need of resuscitation, according to the WHO.
The WHO’s statement highlighted that tens of thousands of displaced individuals are using the hospital for shelter, exacerbating the dire conditions. The facility is experiencing a severe shortage of drinking water and food.
A team from the World Health Organization and other United Nations agencies managed to deliver medical supplies to the hospital on Saturday. The situation on the ground was described as chaotic, with new patients continually arriving at the emergency room. Notably, patients with trauma injuries were reportedly being treated on the floor, and there was a lack of pain management resources. The statement underscores the urgent humanitarian crisis unfolding in the region.
