Meta is now implementing end-to-end encryption for one-on-one chats and calls on its Messenger platform, fulfilling a long-standing commitment that has been in the pipeline for quite some time. With end-to-end encryption activated, only the individuals engaged in the conversation—sender and recipient—can access the contents of the messages, according to the company.
While encrypted chats were initially introduced as an opt-in feature in Messenger back in 2016, the recent development signifies that end-to-end encrypted messages and calls for one-on-one conversations will become the standard moving forward.
Loredana Crisan, VP of Messenger, emphasized the meticulous process undertaken to ensure the accuracy and security of this feature, stating, “This has taken years to deliver because we’ve taken our time to get this right. Our engineers, cryptographers, designers, policy experts, and product managers have worked tirelessly to rebuild Messenger features from the ground up.” Meta is now implementing
Crucially, users adopting encrypted chats won’t have to compromise on Messenger’s existing features. Themes and custom reactions, among other functionalities, will still be available. However, Crisan acknowledges that the transition of all Messenger chats to default encryption may take some time to complete. This move towards end-to-end encryption aligns with a broader industry trend towards enhancing user privacy and security in digital communication platforms.
While this is a good step, end-to-end encryption for group Messenger chats is still opt-in for now. Instagram messages are also not encrypted by default, though Meta said in August that would happen “shortly after” the rollout of default private Messenger chats.
