Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pulled his country’s negotiators from Qatar, calling off hostage negotiation talks saying they had reached an “impasse” with Hamas.

Negotiations had previously led to a weeklong cease-fire, resulting in the release of over 100 Hamas-held hostages and 240 Palestinian prisoners. Despite the conflict resuming on Friday, the Biden administration, Arab allies, and certain factions within the Israeli government advocated for an extended pause to continue the release of hostages.

Hamas did not fulfill its part of the agreement, failing to release all children and women as outlined in the approved list forwarded to and accepted by Hamas, according to a statement from the Israeli prime minister’s office.calling off hostage

Secretary of State Antony Blinken, during his recent visit to Israel, attributed the breakdown of the cease-fire deal to Hamas. However, he also emphasized the importance of Israel adhering to international humanitarian law and the laws of war, especially in considering the safety of Gaza civilians. Blinken acknowledged Israel’s plans to take measures to protect civilians and stressed the significance of monitoring these efforts closely.

There is growing U.S. pressure on Israel, particularly regarding the future of Gaza after the conflict. The United States has been advocating for the establishment of an independent Palestinian government. However, Israeli officials have suggested the possibility of some form of military control over the region. The differing visions for the post-war Gaza are contributing to ongoing discussions and negotiations between the two parties.

As fighting ramped up again Saturday, the Israeli military said it struck 400 targets in Gaza, including 50 in southern Gaza, where an estimated 2 million civilians shelter from the conflict.

The Biden administration has faced increasing pressure to support an indefinite cease-fire in the conflict, with concerns raised over substantial civilian casualties. Despite these calls, both the administration and the Israeli government have resisted requests for a long-term pause in the hostilities. The situation remains a point of contention as discussions around the duration and terms of a cease-fire continue.
