Israel and Hamas set

As of now, there is a four-day truce between Israel and Hamas set to expire after Monday. The pause, initiated on Friday, aimed to facilitate the release of Israelis and foreign nationals held hostage by militants in Gaza, leading to the freedom of some Palestinians from Israeli jails. Over 7,000 Palestinian political prisoners are currently held in Israeli prisons, with more than 2,500 under administrative detention without charges or trial, according to Tala Nasir, a lawyer with Addameer, an advocacy group for Palestinian prisoners.

The situation underscores the significant role of incarceration in the Israeli approach to the occupation and oppression of Palestinians, as highlighted by Israeli journalist Orly Noy. Noy emphasizes the disparity in treatment within the same system, where individuals involved in severe incidents can go free while minors throwing stones are labeled as dangerous terrorists. Negotiations are underway to extend the four-day truce in Gaza, which is currently in its final day. During this period, Hamas has released a total of 58 hostages, including 39 Israeli citizens, 17 Thai workers, a Filipino worker, and an Israeli Russian. Israel, in turn, has released 117 Palestinian prisoners, predominantly women and children, some of whom were held without charge. Notably, one of the first hostages released was 85-year-old Holocaust survivor Yaffa Adar, who was captured from her home in the kibbutz Nir Oz.
