NBC political correspondent Steve Kornacki sounded the alarm on a new NBC poll that showed former President Trump beating President Biden in a hypothetical general match-up for the first time in the NBC poll’s history.
In another general election match-up poll, Trump secured a lead over Biden with 46% support compared to the president’s 44%. Steve Kornacki, while discussing additional poll findings, highlighted that Biden had traditionally held an advantage over Trump in terms of “likability.”
However, based on NBC’s latest results, that advantage was now erased, with both candidates receiving a 36% positive rating. In a noteworthy shift, Biden’s negative rating was reported to be one point higher than Trump’s, signaling a change in the previous likability advantage Biden enjoyed, at least for the time being. Kornacki further emphasized President Biden’s approval rating in the NBC poll, noting that it represented the lowest measurement ever recorded for the president in their polling. According to the poll, only 40% of registered voters approve of Biden’s job performance. This suggests a significant decline in public approval for the president, marking a challenging period for his administration.
“If you take a look here by party, I think it’s significant for two reasons: one, Independents, obviously, more than two to one disapprove. You don’t want to be there as an incumbent president. But I think equally significant, no surprise, 7% of Republicans approve of Joe Biden, job performance, but three times as many Democrats, 21%, that’s more than one in five, say they disapprove. You need much more unified support in your own party if you’re going to have a successful reelection campaign,” Kornacki said.
