Americans across the country participated in Tuesday’s off-year election, exercising their democratic right to vote on contentious ballot measures and competitive gubernatorial races, among other issues.

Democrats secured a number of victories on Tuesday, with the re-election of Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, Ohio voters passing a ballot measure to protect abortion rights in the state, and Democrats in Virginia gaining control of the state’s Senate and House of Delegates.

However, in Mississippi, Republicans emerged victorious, as Democratic candidate Brandon Presley conceded the gubernatorial race to the Republican incumbent, Governor Tate Reeves.

Republican Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves won reelection on Tuesday, officially defeating Democratic challenger candidate Brandon Presley.

Reeves was favored in part because he – like other Southern Republicans – cast his opponent as a tool of national Democrats who support abortion rights and other policies rejected by conservatives from coast to coast.

“Joe Biden and his buddies have funded his campaign,” Reeves said last week during his debate with Presley, which was marked by insults and interruptions.

Youngkin had successfully rallied Republicans in Virginia around a vision of turning the state into a solidly Republican stronghold, with the goal of achieving a Republican-controlled legislature. However, Democrats managed to thwart the governor’s plans earlier in the election night by maintaining their majority in the state Senate.
