Republican Senator Dan Sullivan of Alaska, along with his GOP colleagues Joni Ernst of Iowa, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Todd Young of Indiana, and Mitt Romney of Utah, convened in the chamber on Wednesday night. Their objective was to expedite the confirmation of 115 top military nominees, whose nominations had been delayed due to Republican Senator Tommy Tuberville’s hold on military promotions, driven by concerns over Pentagon abortion policy.
During a lengthy session lasting more than four hours, these Republican senators meticulously presented the nominees’ qualifications and made the case that Tuberville’s obstruction was detrimental to military preparedness. They argued that this hold unfairly penalized officers who bore no responsibility for the Pentagon’s policy and set a worrisome precedent in the U.S. Senate. Consequently, Senator Tuberville was compelled to raise objections individually for 61 nominations. Republican Senator Dan
Senator Sullivan vowed, “That’ll be 61 tonight, and Senator Ernst and I, along with numerous other colleagues, are committed to continuing this effort. We’ll be returning here regularly.”
He expressed his support for the generals and admirals whose confirmations were held up, saying, “My message to our generals and admirals who are being held up – hang in there. Some of us have your back. We have your back. We’ll be coming here every night to try and get you guys confirmed.”
Senator Sullivan emphasized earlier in the evening that Tuberville’s holds were causing significant disruptions to military readiness, especially during a precarious global moment. He stated, “As a member of the Armed Services committee and as a former US Marine Corps colonel, we all understand here in the Senate that America must field its most capable leaders in times like these. Unfortunately, that’s not happening right now, and it’s imperative that this situation changes.”
