Florida officials have issued a directive to state universities and colleges to disband student chapters that support the Palestinian cause on their campuses amid the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. State University System Chancellor Ray Rodrigues sent a letter to university presidents on Tuesday, instructing them to dismantle the chapters affiliated with the National Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP). This action follows the national group’s response to Hamas’s recent attack on Israel.

In response to this development, and in anticipation of a “Day of Resistance,” the National Students for Justice in Palestine (National SJP) issued a “toolkit” that characterizes Operation Al-Aqsa Flood as “the resistance” and explicitly states: “Palestinian students in exile are PART of this movement, not in solidarity with this movement,” as mentioned by Rodrigues in his letter.

Rodrigues further pointed out that it is a violation of Florida law to “knowingly provide material support… to a designated foreign terrorist organization.” He argued that in this case, the National SJP has openly identified itself as part of the Operation Al-Aqsa Flood, which is considered a terrorist-led attack.

Additionally, Rodrigues clarified in his letter that the existence of National SJP chapters is contingent on the main organization’s oversight. Due to the National SJP’s association with terrorism, and in consultation with Governor DeSantis, the decision was made to deactivate these student chapters. It was suggested that these chapters may explore the formation of a new organization that complies with Florida state laws and university policies. Both institutions were encouraged to grant waivers for any fall deadlines that may be affected by this reapplication process. Florida officials have issued

This development coincides with criticism from Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, who has expressed concerns about Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ decision to disband the student chapters. Ramaswamy emphasized that attempting to restrict their freedom of speech would not address the underlying issues.

Governor DeSantis, considered a prominent contender in the 2024 GOP race and a staunch supporter of Israel, has maintained a strong pro-Israel stance in response to the recent conflicts, which has triggered pro- and anti-Israel demonstrations on a global scale.
