Chinese smartphone company OnePlus this week introduced its first foldable smartphone, the OnePlus Open. OnePlus joins several other manufacturers that have come out with foldable smartphones, including Samsung, Google, and Xiaomi. We picked up the OnePlus Open to see how it compares to Apple’s latest flagship, the iPhone 15 Pro Max.
The OnePlus Open bears a resemblance to the Galaxy Fold in its book-like folding mechanism. In its folded state, the cover screen boasts a 6.31-inch display, positioning it between the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max in terms of size. Upon unfolding, the screen expands to 7.82 inches, making it slightly smaller than the iPad mini. These displays are of the OLED variety and offer a smooth 120Hz refresh rate. OnePlus is promoting a “Ceramic Guard” cover glass, which appears strikingly similar to Apple’s Ceramic Shield technology.
In terms of form factor, the OnePlus Open stands in stark contrast to Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro Max since Apple has not yet ventured into the realm of foldable smartphones. However, it does share some common internal components with other high-end devices. The OnePlus Open exudes a premium aura, and in terms of size, it falls between the Z Fold5 and the Pixel Fold. Notably, it achieves a flat fold with a nearly imperceptible crease, all while maintaining a sleek and lightweight profile.
When the Open is folded in half, it measures 11.7mm in thickness, but when unfolded, it becomes remarkably slim at 5.8mm. In contrast, the iPhone 15 Pro Max is 8.25mm thick. In terms of weight, the Open tips the scales at 239 grams, which is 18 grams heavier than the 15 Pro Max. Chinese smartphone company
OnePlus has formed a partnership with the renowned camera company Hasselblad, and this collaboration is reflected in the camera setup of the OnePlus Open. The device features a 48-megapixel wide-angle camera, a 64-megapixel telephoto camera equipped with 6x in-sensor lossless zoom, and a 48-megapixel ultra wide-angle camera. In addition to these, there’s a 20-megapixel front-facing selfie camera accessible when the OnePlus Open is unfolded, and a 32-megapixel selfie camera that can be used when the device is closed.Design wise, the lenses are in a large circular housing at the back of the device, which OnePlus likens to a the face of a luxury watch. The lens housing is super massive, and it can be hard to get photos from some of the lenses without your fingers getting in the way.
