Israel’s military has declared a six-hour window for Palestinians to evacuate southward along specified routes within Gaza. Tens of thousands of residents are leaving their homes in response to a stark evacuation order, issued in anticipation of a potential Israeli ground assault.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) had previously warned over 1 million residents in northern Gaza to evacuate on Friday. Simultaneously, they concentrated troops and military equipment at the border. While maintaining a relentless barrage of airstrikes in response to the deadly attacks carried out by the Islamist militant group Hamas on October 7.
Even before this warning, more than 400,000 Palestinians already been displace within Gaza over the past week due to deteriorating conditions within the besieged territory.
However, the evacuation order and the possibility of a ground incursion have drawn significant criticism from human rights organizations. Including the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) head. who voiced concerns about the “catastrophic humanitarian consequences” such actions could entail.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced. On Saturday that it would permit individuals to travel south within Gaza “for their own safety” along designated routes.
