Palestinian militants operating in the Gaza Strip conducted a highly unusual incursion into southern Israel on Saturday. They unleashed a barrage of thousands of rockets into the country, coinciding with the announcement of a new operation by the ruling Hamas militant group.
In response to these developments, Israel launched airstrikes against targets in Gaza, setting the stage for what was expected to be another intense round of conflict between these long-standing adversaries.
Various videos circulating on social media depicted scenes of apparent Palestinian gunmen wearing uniforms within the Israeli town of Sderot. One video from Gaza portrayed what seemed to be the lifeless body of an Israeli soldier, tragically surrounded by an angry crowd chanting “God is Great.” Additionally, there was another video that appeared to show Palestinian militants transporting a live Israeli soldier on a motorcycle. Other videos showed a group of Palestinian men celebrating around and atop a burning Israeli tank. It’s important to note that the authenticity of these videos could not be immediately confirmed.
In a recorded message, he firmly declared, “Enough is enough,” urging Palestinians to join the ongoing struggle. He emphasized that Hamas had already launched more than 5,000 rockets into Israel.
Salah Arouri, a Hamas leader living in exile, framed this operation as a response to what he termed “the crimes of the occupation.” He stated that the fighters were defending the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem and the many Palestinian prisoners held by Israel.
The Israeli military confirmed multiple infiltrations along the Gaza border in southern Israel. And issued instructions for residents to remain indoors. In an official statement, they declared a state of war alert, stating, “In the last hour, the Hamas terrorist organization initiated a massive rocket barrage from the Gaza Strip into Israeli territory, while terrorists infiltrated Israeli territory at various locations.”
The sound of rockets launching and whooshing through the air echoed in Gaza. In while sirens blared as far as Tel Aviv. As the rocket attacks persisted, affecting regions across southern. And central Israel, millions of Israelis advised to remain close to bomb shelters within their homes and apartment buildings.
