Australian cities are facing a double onslaught of fire and flooding, with several communities bracing for flooding hours after the bushfires threatened.

Bushfires have ravaged the Gippsland region of Victoria and the south coast of New South Wales this week. And bringing back memories of the devastating Black Summer bushfires that hit the region four years ago.

While the rain brought some relief from the fires, it also raised flood warnings. And adding to the challenges facing these communities.

Australian cities are facing and has experienced a number of disasters in recent years, all exacerbated by climate change. Prime Minister Antony Albanese said Wednesday that this is one of the reasons his government determined to take action on climate change.

In Gippsland, a rural area located in the southeastern part of Victoria. So, hundreds of firefighters have been tirelessly battling two major blazes for several days. These fires have forced evacuations and tragically resulted in the loss of at least one home.

Meanwhile, in New South Wales (NSW), authorities have sadly confirmed the destruction of several homes due to fires in the Bega Valley on Tuesday.

In both Victoria and New South Wales, the fires have consumed approximately 25,000 hectares (250 square kilometers) of land. And covering an area roughly five times the size of Manhattan Island.

However, a significant cold front is currently delivering heavy rainfall to the southeast of Australia on Wednesday. Authorities have issued warnings for potential flash and riverine flooding as a result of this rain.

In the Gippsland region of Victoria, which previously threatened by wildfires, now a risk of isolating by floodwaters. Residents have cautioned by Victoria’s State Emergency Services chief officer, Tim Wiebusch, not to attempt to drive through these flash floodwaters, as it could have dire consequences.

In New South Wales, the primary flood risk is inland, even though some rain has fallen on the fire-affected areas. In other parts of the state, extreme fire danger persists due to hot, dry. And windy conditions, leading to total fire bans in certain areas.

Australia has faced a relentless barrage of disasters in recent years, including prolonged droughts and unprecedented bushfires, consecutive years of record-breaking floods, and six instances of mass coral bleaching events on the Great Barrier Reef.

The latest report from the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) emphasizes that a future marked by increasingly severe disasters is almost certain unless immediate. And comprehensive measures take to combat climate change. This dire warning underscores the urgent need for global action to mitigate the impacts of climate change.
