Sylvester Stallone and Jason Statham couldn’t rescue “Expend4bles” from a lackluster debut at the box office. The fourth installment of this action-packed franchise experienced its weakest opening weekend ever, with just $8.3 million in earnings, a far cry from its predecessor’s $15.8 million debut nearly a decade ago, which eventually raked in $214 million worldwide.

“A Haunting in Venice” claimed third place with earnings of $6.3 million. This movie, the third Agatha Christie adaptation by Kenneth Branagh following “Murder on the Orient Express” (2017) and “Death on the Nile” (2022), has amassed a total of $25.3 million after two weeks in theaters.

Denzel Washington’s “The Equalizer 3” held steady in fourth place, bringing in $4.725 million in its fourth week. Domestically, it has now grossed a commendable $81.1 million.

“Barbie,” the standout film of 2023, continues to carry its summer success into the fall season. Greta Gerwig’s box-office hit maintained a strong presence in the top five, raking in $3.2 million this week and accumulating an impressive domestic total of over $630 million over the course of 10 weeks.

In the sixth spot, “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3” earned $3 million, while “It Lives Inside” debuted in its first week with $2.6 million. “Dumb Money,” Sony’s portrayal of the GameStop stock frenzy, remained steady in the eighth position for the second consecutive week, with $2.5 million.

“Blue Beetle” slipped to ninth place, securing $1.8 million, and “Oppenheimer” rounded out the top 10 with $1.6 million. Christopher Nolan’s film has now accumulated $321 million in domestic earnings.

Overall, the box office numbers continued to be sluggish, with many Hollywood projects still on hold due to ongoing strikes by the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists and the Writers Guild of America.

Here are the estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore. Final domestic figures will be released on Monday:
